The Fund - 2021 in Review!
Jenny Fielding and Scott Hartley
2021 was intense!
While the roller coaster year had many twists and turns, ultimately, we have so much to be grateful for including the 500 founders and operators in The Fund community.
As we roll into the new year, a quick look back on the last 12 months:
4 new micro-funds
69 core investments
37% of all capital deployed into female founded companies
175 new founder / operator LPs joined our community
40+ SPVs to support follow-on rounds
Our 2018 Fund crosses a 4x multiple 🚀
In 2021 we expanded our geographic footprint beyond NYC, LA, London and The Rockies to Austin, The Midwest and even Australia. Beyond geographic expansion, we started a dedicated vehicle to support female-led companies where the majority of our Limited Partners are also women.
In terms of themes, we continue to be strong investors in fintech, health and consumer with some gaming, logistics and future of media making an appearance as well.
As venture rounds were happening at a fast clip in 2021, we also upped our follow-on game and got smart about SPVs. We completed more than 40 SPVs from a group of 250 LPs and are now one of the more active syndicates on AngelList. In fact, we are now also syndicating later stage deals from our LP founders. It’s amazing to be able to support our LPs in the same way they have supported us, and strengthen the feedback loops of founders supporting founders.
Since community is at our core, we are looking to bring on a community-minded team member to help deepen our connections. Please connect with firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
So what’s next in 2022? We have some big plans for the next iteration of The Fund (looking at you Nigeria and Latam…) so stay tuned. But for now, we are continuing to do the work we love - supporting pre-seed founders at the earliest stages of their journey, and building a global community of world positive builders and operators.
